It has become a tradition that our client, LTE logistics & transport, gives us a Christmas tree. On Tuesday, it was time: The CEO of LTE, Mr. Mandl, and the LTE CFO, Mr. Benda, personally delivered it. Adorned beautifully, the tree brings the Christmas spirit to our office spaces.

The brand new ELL Vectrons, which we handed over to Nederlandse Spoorwegen in November, started their regular service as IC Amsterdam-Berlin on December 10th at 10 a.m.

We are thankful for the good cooperation while preparing the locs and for the start of service and wish safe journeys!

  • Initial fixed call for 60 locomotives
  • Delivery beginning in 2025

European Locomotive Leasing Group (ELL), based in Vienna and Munich, and Siemens Mobility signed a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 200 further Vectron locomotives. Specifically, the locomotives will be provided in various power system variants for use in both passenger and freight service. Sixty locomotives were initially ordered and will be delivered successively beginning in 2025. This fourth framework agreement between ELL and Siemens Mobility further reinforces the long-standing and strong partnership between the two companies. By 2027, ELL will have at least 301 Siemens Vectron locomotives in service and thus operate Europe’s largest Vectron fleet. Over the medium term, the new agreement offers ELL the possibility of increasing its Vectron fleet to over 400 locomotives.

“For ELL, this agreement is a milestone in the company’s development. Our goal is to expand our market leadership in the areas of customer friendliness, reliability, and efficiency. We are convinced of the future of rail. Superior climate friendliness and cost-efficiency on the long international rail axes as well as the structural change in rail freight transport make the full-service leasing of locomotives a highly attractive business for the future. ELL is pursuing a consistent zero-emissions strategy. Our most important assets are our focused fleet policy and a comprehensive service network at more than 30 locations throughout Europe. The development partnership with Siemens and the concentration on a standardized locomotive type are an important building block for us to successfully prevail in this market,” said Christian Kern, CEO European Locomotive Leasing Group.

“For many years now, ELL has been relying on the quality and reliability of our Vectron locomotives. This new framework agreement makes a further contribution to climate protection and again underscores the advantages offered by our locomotive platform. With the Vectron, ELL can react flexibly to customer requirements and offer different configurations for providing cross-border transport throughout Europe,” said Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility.

The agreement in detail

In the framework agreement, ELL secures the procurement of a wide range of multi-system locomotives, including the Vectron Dual Mode. By ordering optional packages, ELL can precisely equip the locomotives to meet specific requirements and applications, and for service in special areas. It was also agreed that Siemens Mobility will actively support ELL in further strengthening its competence regarding vehicle operation, maintenance, and servicing.

The Vectron as a success factor

Since its first delivery in 2012, more than 2,200 locomotives from the Vectron family have been sold to 95 customers and the fleet has covered a total of over 850 million kilometers. The locomotives are currently approved for operation in 20 European countries. The Vectron and its variously equipped variants are built in the Siemens Mobility plant in Munich-Allach.

We are expanding our partnership with Nederlandse Spoorwegen to a total of 16 locomotives which are currently being wrapped by FLEETSHIELD in Rotterdam with the distinctive Dutch design.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen is a demanding customer and therefore a perfect match for our ELL Vectrons!

Since 2014, we have been working together with RTB CARGO and are moving across borders in freight transport ranging from Eastern Europe to all major North Sea ports. RTB has been a customer from the very beginning, and now we are securing future growth together with a long-term framework agreement to consolidate further cooperation. RTB CARGO has already called up the first locomotive from the framework agreement and will rent another Vectron MS in the summer of 2024. This will then be the 12th ELL locomotive in RTB Cargo’s state-of-the-art fleet.

The CEO of ELL, Christian Kern, is delighted with this cooperation: “This is an important step and the deepening of an excellent partnership. Our goal is to support our customers’ strategy with a reliable and flexible locomotive portfolio. We have already shown that the cooperation with RTB works excellently – further expansion is the logical consequence.”

Comment Thilo Beuven / RTB: “We are very pleased that we have been able to agree on a further growth path together with ELL. The state-of-the-art fleet and the excellent availability, which the ELL team ensures with great commitment, are a perfect fit for RTB CARGO.”

7! Today we signed another contract with Snälltåget in Malmö/Sweden!

ELL – European Locomotive Leasing and Snälltåget share a partnership and a passion. 7 of our locomotives are now running between Malmö, Stockholm and Are and since recently also as night trains between Malmö and Berlin. Snälltåget is one of the most innovative private railway companies with spectacular ideas for the future. Without giving too much away: Austria also plays a role.

Here are a few snapshots from the station.

Vienna, March 3, 2023 – The European Locomotive Leasing Group (ELL), one of the leading asset managers in the European rail market with headquarters in Vienna and Munich, is accelerating its international expansion. By 2025, they plan to invest up to 315 million euros in expanding their own fleet. Currently, the company boasts the largest Siemens Vectron fleet in Europe, and their investment strategy aims to solidify this market position.

In concrete numbers, this means: 56 Vectron locomotives currently in delivery, with an additional 13 already ordered from Siemens. The ELL Vectron fleet will thus grow to a total of 251 locomotives by 2025. Thanks to significant approvals across various countries, these locomotives can be deployed flexibly throughout Europe.

Mag. Christian Kern, CEO of the European Locomotive Leasing Group, succinctly summarizes the expansion: “Our goal is to support our customers’ growth in European passenger and freight transport with our zero-emission locomotives.” ELL exclusively invests in Siemens Vectron locomotives and provides its customers with a specialized network of workshops across Europe. Focusing on a uniform locomotive type allows them to achieve maximum efficiency, highest reliability, and a targeted service business. The investments demonstrate the full confidence of our owners, Axa and Credit Agricole/Predica, in the company and our business model. ELL locomotives represent the most environmentally friendly and modern choice in the rail transport of the future.
